Emily Jane Todd is not your average
small town librarian - quiet, complacent and timid.
Deep in her heart, she has womanly
desires and craves adventure. However, she's
willing to keep her wants in check for a life with TV reporter
and fiancé, Donald Stewart. A life with Donald means
marriage, children and family. Emily believes these things are
all she could ever want in life...until a mysterious man appears
late one night in her headlights. His claim of amnesia has Emily
hesitantly promising to help him discover his identity. His
ID reveals his name is Michael Chamberlain, and the media reveals
he's wanted by the FBI. Now, on the run with Michael, Emily's
secret craving for adventure is becoming overwhelming, and her
womanly desire for him is so strong that she's willing to risk
her life for him.
Michael has loved Emily for centuries. As
her guardian angel he's given all for her safety and protection.
Though an angel loves all God's beings, Michael has a deeper
and more carnal love for Emily. Someone has targeted her for
death and the only way he can save her is to take human form
and help her find her would?be murderer. Though he knows that
he will eventually leave her, he must decide if his love for
her is strong enough to give up his angel status and live
with her as a mere mortal.
I've been a Deveraux fan since 1979 when I
picked up her first book. Since that time I've read her books
over and over again, loving each one of her characters. Generally,
Deveraux's stories are complex with vivid characters. However,
I believe her recent work "An Angel for Emily" smacks
a little too much of Travolta's film "Michael".
I, personally, didn't find this to be one of Deveraux's best
efforts as the storyline is weak, the plot thin and the characters
iffy at best. I wouldn't recommend "An Angel for Emily"
for first time Deveraux readers, as her earlier works are
much better. But seasoned fans will enjoy the out of the ordinary
storyline. "An Angel for Emily" is a sweet story
and a quick read.
