Award winning author Penelopi Neri's
newest book "Moonshadow" could herald the
return of the Gothic Romance. A dark foreboding
house with blood
red windows, a ghost that haunts the halls and mysterious deaths
all pull readers deeper and deeper into the meat of this story.
Madeleine is the only daughter of an English
country doctor. She's an avowed spinster who wishes to only
take care of her father into his later years. But when an
injured man shows up on their doorstep, Madeleine's future
will change forever. However, she begins to have second thoughts
when her new husband takes her to his home to live. The blood
red glow from the windows as they shine in the afternoon sun
foretells what is to come. Ghosts, legends, dreams of death
and dastardly deads invade Madeleine's mind at every turn.
Lord Justin de Harcourt, 12th Earl of Steyning,
never thought he'd know such joy as he has found with Madeleine.
The few short weeks that he's known her during his recovery
made him realize that he would be a fool to let her slip away
from him. Marrying her, he takes her home with him to Steyning
Hall to live forever, happily. He hopes that with her sunny
outlook and gregarious personality that the shadows that have
lurked over his home for so many years will be vanquished.
Only, he doesn't count on his wife becoming the catalyst that
brings a family legend to life.
"Moonshadow" is a deeply engrossing
story with surprising twists and turns on every page. There
are no dull spots here, nor are any parts of the storyline
left dangling, left unanswered, at the close of the book.
A plethora of secondary character keep the story moving quickly
along while at the same time brightens an otherwise overly
dark tale. The switch between Medieval and 19th century England's
are made smoothly. Equally, the rich detail of both periods
is quite believable. And the legend of Steyning Hall kept
me engrossed in the story. As with any good mystery, the writing
and storyline kept me glued to the pages trying to figure
out how things would play out, and to see how the evils would
be righted.
I have to say I quite enjoyed this story. The
book was hard to put down, so much so that I sought to find
any reason at all to pick it up again. Hunky and charming Justin
is the perfect hero and Madeleine is the go-getter type of heroine
I love to read. I'd definitely recommend this story to those
that enjoy a well-rounded, deeply engrossing and intriguing
read.
